Fletcher Thompson

This was recently posted on Twitter - anyone know what this is? Is this a proposed building on campus or downtown?

Hey CT! Do any of you recognize this design from @CCSU?

I usually hear about plans for new buildings. Aside from the ones mentioned somewhere else on this site, this one's new to me. The only building in downtown New Britain that is thought to be in line for classes, etc., is an existing one, formerly known as the ACMAT building and the PLAZA.

Maybe it is an old/alternative design for the Mid-Campus Residence Hall?

This new residence hall is an eight-story, 182,000 s.f. facility providing housing for 400 students. The building’s design responds to the programmatic request for quad suites comprised of two double bedrooms, living room, and two full bathrooms per suite. It’s L-shape creates an intimate quad that contains and defines the campus boundary while providing an urban-scaled outdoor courtyard. The main floor houses a reception desk, mailroom, multi-purpose room, formal lounge, laundry, Dorm Director’s Suite and Housing Administration Office. Resident Assistants’ rooms are located at each end of the floor utilizing a large glass curtain wall system. The air handling units are located in the attic and makeup air is provided by dormer louvers, an element that is common to many of the campus buildings.

Just did some checking. The S/L/A/M Collaborative was the architect for Mid which is a 220,000 square foot building. So these drawings may be a conceptual drawing for what became Mid. The master plan doesn't show any new residence halls being built before 2020, just renovations to Carroll. Unless you take away a parking lot, there is no room to build on the footprint that exists now. That said, the payback on a dorm is about five years and it keeps on giving after that - a parking lot, not so much.

Buying the Plaza wasn't in the plan either. The residence hall in the above link I posted is in the place of James Lot on Paul M Dr

I believe the Fletcher Thompson (FT) design plan that is shown above was a precursor to the plan that eventually made it. This FT plan would have put the new dorm next to James Hall. But, they decided to move the dorm plan to another site, the old rugby field next to the student center parking lot.
