NEW BRITAIN — Gov. Dannel Malloy and Central Connecticut State University’s incoming president, Zulma Toro, will join Mark Ojakian, president of the Connecticut State College and University System, and Department of Administrative Services Commissioner Melody Currey at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday to break ground on the Willard-DiLoreto renovation and expansion project.

The event will be held at a tented site near the Willard-DiLoreto Parking Lot on Manafort Drive, near Stanley Street.

The $62 million project involves gutting and renovating the two, 50-year-old adjacent buildings and adding a 30,000-square-foot addition connecting the two buildings on all four floors. Technology upgrades, HVAC improvements, and an ADA accessible elevator will be installed. The new section will add classrooms and offices while creating an atrium for use as common space.

That's great news JJ. I know both buildings have been vacated.

“This should have been done long ago,” said Malloy, who explained he has a close relationship with the university since his two brothers, sister and sister in law attended the school. “If we want people to compete in manufacturing, if we want to have better teachers, better arts, we owe it to the students, to tax payers” to reinvest.”

The project is part of the CSCU 2020 renovation master plan that will renovate the approximate 60,000 Gross square feet of the four floor and basement of Willard Hall and approximate 45,000 gross square feet of the four floor DiLoreto Hall and create and approximate 35,000 “in-fill” structure combing the two buildings that have not been renovated since they were constructed in 1953 and 1969, respectively.
Yes, this is long overdue! Everyone associated with Central has know that for a long time. There is still a lot more to be done!
