Mike Anthony: Central Connecticut’s basic approach to dominating defense helping team during another championship chase

Most football coaches are crazy. They analyze and plan and overanalyze and overplan unlike any other kind of person.

Central Connecticut coach Ryan McCarthy and defensive coordinator Ron DiGravio probably fit this description in some way, but their shared vision for the Blue Devils’ defense is basically this: simple works.

“We’re letting our kids play,” McCarthy said. “We're not overloading the system. I didn’t want to do a million different things. I want to do what we do, do it well, fit it to our personnel and work to our strengths. The No. 1 reason you win is always because you have good players. We have good players.”

The Blue Devils (6-1, 2-0 Northeast Conference) are putting together a special season, with only a disastrous failed punt preventing an undefeated record to this point.
