VS SHU 1/15/2020

Post by hilltopper » Wed Jan 15, 2020 2:53 pm

I have gone to many games at SHU, but then we had at least, an outside chance to win.
Does this team have any chance of winning tonight?

It seems to me that the 2019-2020 Blue Devils when playing at their best.... are good enough to lose by single digits.
They seem to be able to hang in there for awhile and then they go through an extended period of turnovers and/or the basket has a lid on it.
And then before you know it... the game is for all purposes over.

One thing I have learned from this season is that bad defense and bad offense result in a bad won/loss record.
Who would have thunk it? #-o

I don't go into any game this year wanting a win. I just what a competitive game. If they are within 10 points at half time I will be happy.

Do they have a shot? Basically no, at least per espn. 3% change and 16.5 point dogs. DM has never beat Latina, 0-6, no reason to think tonight will be any different.

Doesn’t matter, they will all be Steph Curry tonight.

Halftime: 22 points
Down 12 reb in the first half. That is a rate for SHU of +24 rebounds if they can keep that pace for the 2nd half.
SHU has more Offensive Rebounds than Central has defensive rebounds. In other words when SHU misses a shot more often than not they get a 2nd shot.
You don't have to be a good shooting team when you get those extra chances. ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,)

Once again DM shows he is not capable of managing the game come crunch time. Central gets the ball down 4 with just under 2 minutes to play and with 2 time outs in his pocket he refuses to use them to set up a play. CCCU ends up forcing a bad shot and SHU gets a quick lay in to go up by 6 with under 1:30 to play. Still no time out called, then another turnover which leads to a SHU 3-ball ( game over). Obviously he learned nothing about coaching from Calhoun.

Amen unknown.

Hill, that was the main reason, the end, you’re right.

What worries me is the basketball iq still isn’t there. Can’t fault their effort on d but they don’t anticipate anything. And the stupid fouls, my God. DM has to get Ian more involved. And Coleman, wth is he doing?! Has all the talent to take over any NEC game and he’s practically invisible in 19 minutes. So many things wrong. 😑

This team has show they can win but this is a team that does not win.DM has talked about how the culture of the team last year was bad. He uses that as an excuse but I look at it as a failure of his coaching ability. Culture is set by the coach. The culture of this team is it ok not to win.

Question is, when does the team pack it in and he loses them? Losing sucks as we all know but it has to weigh on the people actually doing the losing, 0-17 can't be fun. Chance to win tomorrow, better one on Saturday but then what does DM do about SHU again next weekend?

How can you tell when an 0-17 team packs it in?

See any game from this time till the end of last year. No defensive effort, selfish play, talking back to the coach. I don’t believe this team has, but assume they will if they don’t start winning.

Yes, i have not noticed a lack of hustle. Just the opposite, the players are giving a max effort right until the inevitable end. It is more of an eyeball test, and right now I am still seeing good effort.
But yes, losing can wear down on the psyche of a player. That being said, I do think that Central is going to get a couple of D1 wins. They have yet to play any of the bottom half of the NEC.

Central's rebound margin for the season is an appalling minus 165. That is against 19 opponents for a minus 8.7 rebounds/game.
In five NEC games the margin is minus 41. A slightly improved minus 8.1 reb/game.

-There were 4 games in which Central had a rebound edge, all losses. So that is not the only problem.
-D3 Connecticut College out rebounded Central.
-The two worst rebounding deficits were against NEC opponents, SFU and SHU.

Now rebounds don't necessarily translate into points but it does translate into possessions that you have and your opponent does not.
And some of it is just the particular talents/instincts of the personnel, but some of it is teachable, boxing out for example and anticipating the angles of shots. Remember how Brandon Peel always seemed to be in the right spot for the rebound?

Not to say everything else is good certainly there is need for improvement in other areas, but this is would be a good place to start...probably the coaches are doing just that.

I think it's dangerous to look at raw rebounding numbers. When you miss as many shots as this team does, your opponent is always going to outrebound you.

But even by rebounding %, this team is near or at the bottom of the league in rebounding. And like I've said before, it's not even close to the biggest issue with this program.

The biggest issue is poor shot selection on both sides of the basketball due to not properly valuing three-pointers.
