Burr Carlson

Post by J.J. » Wed Oct 03, 2018 6:04 pm

Although he transferred to UCONN, I didn't know another former CCSU men's basketball player was drafted.
Burr Richard Carlson, born on January 19, 1928 in Bethel, Connecticut, to the late Mary A. Donlon and Burr Oscar Carlson, passed away at age 90 on September 4, 2018 in Naples, Florida. Raised in Bethel, Connecticut, Burr graduated from Bethel High School and subsequently served in the U.S. Navy from 1945-1946. He then attended college, first, at Central Connecticut State University and then he transferred to the University of Connecticut where he obtained his Undergraduate Degree in Physical Education and then his Masters Degree in Education. As a student at Central Connecticut State University and at the University of Connecticut, Burr played on the men's basketball teams. He was selected to play for the Philadelphia Warriors in the 1952 National Basketball Association draft, becoming the first men's basketball player from the University of Connecticut to be drafted to play for the NBA. Instead of playing for Philadelphia, Burr chose to join the army, serving from 1953 to 1955 and then serving in the Army Reserve from 1955 to 1964. Following his time in the army, Burr began his career in education and as a men's basketball coach at Rockville High School, Bristol Eastern High School and Windsor High School. Most notably, Burr was the assistant and then head coach for the University of Connecticut Men's Basketball team from 1964 to 1969.
