2018-19 Non-Conference schedule

Post by J.J. » Sun Mar 18, 2018 4:17 pm

Never too early to start thinking about next season's schedule.

at Hartford - Back at UHa for Year 4 of the current 6-year deal. 2019 in New Britain and 2020 at West Hartford
at Maine - Black Bears and Blue Devils meet for the 4th straight season
vs. UMass-Lowell - CCSU due for a home game after playing at Lowell the last 2 seasons

vs. Brown (?) CCSU has played Brown in 8 straight seasons; if the series continues it would likely be played at Detrick
at North Carolina A&T (?) This game was not part of the MTE; unless we bought the home game from them, expect a return game

Would be great if we can find another Multi-Team Event (MTE) like we did this season (Rutgers, East Carolina, Coppin St., Cleveland St.).

We also played 4 "guarantee" games on the road last year (St. John's, DePaul, Northern Illinois, and Boston College), so I expect us to do the same next season, especially after the budgetary issues the Athletic Department is facing.

Not surprisingly, it looks like a possible exhibition game is in the works.

From Jeff Jacobs’ column about Jim Calhoun’s Univ-Saint Joseph team in today’s NH Register:
“Calhoun said he has talked to Central Connecticut coach Donyell Marshall about an exhibition game. He said he has talked to the XL Center about a game. Not this year, but he talked to Mohegan Sun for a night with state teams. There been talk with ESPN or Netflix about a series on the process of returning to coach. There is an upcoming vote on a new facility on campus to seat 2,500-3,000 fans.”

I’m ok watching Calhoun coach on the sidelines at Detrick vs. Donyell. :)

The JI article by Neill Ostrout provides some more context:
Calhoun says he’s talked to coach Donyell Marshall at Central Connecticut State and Ed Cooley at Providence about potential exhibition games in the future. … Calhoun said he’s had discussions about the Blue Jays playing games at the XL Center in Hartford (perhaps as the first game of a double-header involving UConn) and at Mohegan Sun (perhaps as part of a tournament with Trinity, Wesleyan and other local Division III programs).

Mark my words...watch Calhoun use his status to weasle a way to get state bonds to pay for this arena. It's before.

People of influence have helped UH get bonding for the Chase Arena and a good portion of the Goodwin College campus in East Hartford.

Georgetown headlines the Jamaican Classic (Montego Bay, Jamaica) from Dec. 16-18. Patrick Ewing going back home to Jamaica. Very, very cool. Other teams in field include South Florida, Ohio, Loyola Marymount, Central Connecticut, Campbell, Austin Peay and FAMU, per source.

A Sunday, hopefully afternoon, game. That would be a nice opportunity to celebrate the 19th anniversary of our December/1999 victory over the Friars.

I had to be home that night but I clearly remember ESPN mocking the score basically saying PC lost as opposed to CCSU won.

They said something like "Are you kidding me? What a horrible loss for PC".

Of course, that pissed me off. Obviously, they didn't research the game because perhaps our best team ever outplayed PC.

We won't be playing UConn this year, as the Huskies just released their schedule:

vs. Morehead State (2K Classic)
vs. UMKC (2K Classic)
Syracuse (2K Classic @ MSG)
Oregon/Iowa (2K Classic @ MSG)
vs. Cornell
vs. New Hampshire
vs. UMass-Lowell
vs Arizona
vs. Lafayette
Florida State (@ Prudential Center)
vs. Manhattan
vs. Drexel
Villanova (@ MSG)

Looks like an easy schedule in Hurley's first season and an awful one for fans. That's 9 home games; 3 games at MSG; and 1 at The Rock. They don't leave the tri-State for a game until January. Only home game worth paying for is against Arizona.

Updated non-conference schedule ... 4 games to complete a 13-game schedule.

Based on the schedule formula the last 2 seasons, we are probably looking at 3 guarantee games on the road plus 1 HOME game. If we can't get another low-major to start a series in New Britain, we will probably have to buy a lower-division team for a home game. I'm also predicting our on-campus games for the Jamaica Classic will be at Georgetown and at LMU. :)

We will also likely have an exhibition game at home vs. a lower-division team like Alverina/Nyack.

Home/Away
(Nov. 6) at Hartford
(Nov. 13) vs. UMass-Lowell
(TBA) at North Carolina A&T
(TBA) at Maine

Guarantee Games
(Dec. 16) at Providence

MTE - Jamaica Classic
(2 games) at Georgetown/Loyola Marymount/Ohio
(Nov. 16) vs. Florida A&M (@ Jamaica)
(Nov. 18) vs. Austin Peay/Campbell (@ Jamaica)
